The Older Brother - The Righteous Lost - Prodigal part 2 of 3
Today is part 2 of a 3-part series for the Parable of The Prodigal son as most have come to know the title. We often look past the older brother in the prodigal story. Some even identify with his sentiment. If you’ve ever felt the elder brother had a point, this episode is for you.
He stayed. He worked. He kept every rule. And when his brother came home from wasting everything, his father killed the fatted calf.
So the elder son stood in the yard and would not go in.
Jesus didn’t tell this story to sinners. He told it to the men murmuring at the edge of the crowd — the ones who said, *This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.*Then He put their exact complaint in the elder brother’s mouth.
Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment.(Luke 15:29)
Listen closely. He never calls him Father. He says he never broke a commandment — while refusing his father’s plea to his face. He complains he was never given a goat, when the whole estate was already his. He won’t even call his brother “brother.”
He served like a slave in a house where he was the heir.
The younger son had to repent of his sins. The elder son would have to repent of his righteousness. That is the hardest repentance there is, because it looks like the thing you should be proud of.
And here’s the trap. If your sense of fairness sided with him, you’ve just found yourself standing where he stood — outside the feast, keeping score, murmuring.
Luke placed a warning right next door. Chapter 16: a rich man who feasted every day, stepped over the beggar at his gate, and only called out “Father” when the gulf was already fixed.
The elder son’s story isn’t finished. The door is still open. But refusal is where departure begins.
Read Luke 15 and 16 together. Then ask which son you’ve been.
