Accelerated Insanity: What the AI Debate Is Missing

Yeah, that's what I call it. I'm not taking away anything from A.I. Stick with me. The phenomenon that we call artificial intelligence is a fait accompli... just accelerated.

The people building artificial intelligence are afraid of what they’re building. They argue about the odds of catastrophe, where the red lines should be, and whether a superintelligent machine can ever be controlled. They may be right about where it leads. They are wrong about why.

In this episode we redefine A.I. as Accelerated Insanity. Everything mankind has ever known, said, written, and imagined went into one side of the machine. Now it is coming out the other side faster than real time. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all happening at once, and what took humanity a thousand years now plays out in three. We are afraid of what comes out of the box, but what comes out of the box is us.

We follow that thread from Cain’s city to the tower of Babel, from the idols that “have mouths, but they speak not” to the image that finally speaks, and from Noah’s 120 years to Paul’s warning that in the last days man’s folly “shall be manifest unto all men.” Along the way we stop at The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and its famous answer of 42, and ask what happens when a machine gives mankind an answer to a question we never asked rightly.

The doomers see the cliff. Scripture names the cause, and the only way out.
