The "he" in Daniel 9:27 - Retraction and Clarification
We don't remove our podcasts if we think we said something wrong. We want you, the listener to stay engaged in the process of learning. We don't profess to be all-knowing by any stretch.
During our discussion about the raising of Lazarus, I think we overstated our position and interpretation of Daniel 9:27. We have had many discussions about this and are still trying to consider the best interpretation of the scripture. I'm not so sure ruffled feathers here are a bad thing. It means people are discussing. We certainly are not ready to dig in and hold fast to the interpretation we presented. It did fit the context but opposing interpretations of that passage do not diminish what happened politically at the time of Jesus' ministry.
It is interesting also because context will even throw our Berean Filter application off regarding this subject. And that threw us off with it. If you focus the discussion on Christ, you get one interpretation. If you focus the discussion on the man of lawlessness, you get a different interpretation and that interpretation all centers on who the "he" is in Daniel 9:27. When we asked out of the context of the discussion around the raising of Lazarus, our Berean filter went rogue on the interpretation it had already given us. This proves that no reading, no commentary, no AI tool is flawless.
So, I don't think I'm going to stand firm on the interpretation we provided in the Podcast about the raising of Lazarus, nor am I ready to stand against it. I'm still treading water a bit here (hopefully not drowning!) Please read Daniel 9 and we'll discuss with anyone who would like to seriously discuss. I've included our correction in the source notes. Prophecy is never easy until it has happened. We're not going to stop our studies. We're not even going to erase our mistakes! We learn by them! But we always want to be very careful with future prophetic scripture. Relative to End Times the thing that I do rest my hat on is this: The only thing we can say with definitive conclusions is that the 3.5 year clock starts ticking when we see the "man of lawlessness" standing in the temple. Paul seems to be saying to us, "you'll know when it happens".
2 Thessalonians 2:3–4.
Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness[fn] is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
