Men Shaped Like Walking Trees - Gaining Gospel Clarity
We took the opportunity today to step back and look at how we read scripture. Jesus has just come from the Decapolis. He's healed a woman's daughter, a deaf mute, fed 10,000 people on the mountain without only 7 loaves of bread. He warns his disciples to beware the leaven of the Pharisees and then we come into Bethsaida.
A small group of people bring a blind man to Jesus. My first thought, is OK... haven't we seen Jesus heal the blind before? But I persisted, and read through the passage, and I had to sit with it a bit. I got to thinking. Sometimes, we trap ourselves inside the familiar and that's what I was supposed to recognize. If I had skipped this passage, I would have missed something really profound.
After learning my lesson, I took my convictions deeper and laid out a simple outline for how one should read the Bible. I started by asking the question: If you ONLY had the Bible as your resource for understanding scripture, how would you do it? No A.I., No books. Not even a local pastor to help you. Could you read the bible all by itself and gain clear, spiritual clarity. Would you see people that looked like trees walking around... or would you be able to see with clarity?
